Managing Family Profiles

Profiles are the core of Manaia. Each profile represents a person (or group of devices) in your household and controls what content is allowed, when internet access is available, and what gets reported.

Understanding Profiles

Every household starts with a Default profile. Any device that connects to your network and hasn't been assigned to a specific profile uses the Default rules.

You can create additional profiles for each family member — typically one per child, and optionally separate profiles for adults who want different filtering levels.

Creating a Profile

1. Go to Profiles in the dashboard

2. Tap Add Profile

3. Enter a name for the profile

4. Choose the content filtering level

Content Categories

Manaia filters 9 content categories. For each profile, you choose which categories to block:

| Category | What It Covers |

|----------|---------------|

| Adult | Pornographic and sexually explicit content |

| Gambling | Online casinos, betting, and gambling sites |

| Violence | Graphic violence, gore, and extreme content |

| Drugs | Drug use, sales, and paraphernalia |

| Dating | Dating apps and hookup sites |

| Gaming | Online gaming platforms and stores |

| Social Media | Social networking platforms |

| Streaming | Video and music streaming services |

| Weapons | Firearms, explosives, and weapons sales |

For a child profile, you might block adult, gambling, violence, drugs, dating, and weapons. For a teenager, you might only block adult and gambling. Adults might choose not to block any categories.

Setting Schedules

Schedules control when internet access is available for a profile. Common uses:

  • Bedtime block: No internet from 9 PM to 7 AM on school nights
  • Homework time: Block social media and gaming during homework hours
  • Weekend flexibility: Different rules for Saturday and Sunday
  • To create a schedule:

    1. Open a profile and go to the Schedules tab

    2. Tap Add Schedule

    3. Choose the days of the week

    4. Set start and end times

    5. Choose what to block during that window (specific categories or all internet)

    6. Optionally allow specific domains (e.g. allow educational sites during homework time)

Schedules apply in the profile's timezone. You can have multiple schedules per profile.

    Screen Time Limits

On Guardian plans and above, you can set daily screen time limits per profile:

  • Set a daily maximum (e.g. 2 hours on school days, 4 hours on weekends)
  • Grant bonus time for specific days when needed
  • View usage tracking to see how much time has been used today
  • When the limit is reached, internet access is paused for that profile. Parents can grant additional time from the dashboard or app.

    Custom Rules

Custom rules let you allow or block specific domains beyond the category filters:

  • Allow rules override category blocks (e.g. allow a specific educational site that's miscategorised as gaming)
  • Block rules block a specific domain regardless of category (e.g. block a particular social media app)
  • To add a custom rule:

    1. Open a profile and go to the Custom Rules tab

    2. Tap Add Rule

    3. Enter the domain (e.g. example.com)

    4. Choose Allow or Block

    5. Optionally enable Match Subdomains to include all subdomains (e.g. cdn.example.com)

Custom rules take priority over category filters.

    AI Safety Reports

On Guardian plans, Manaia generates AI-powered reports that summarise your child's online activity in plain English:

  • Daily reports — A brief summary of the day's activity, including any notable patterns or concerns
  • Weekly summaries — A broader view of the week's trends, category breakdown, and any alerts
  • Conversation starters — Age-appropriate talking points to help you discuss what your child has been doing online
  • Reports are delivered to your email and available in the dashboard under Reports.

    Access Requests

When a child tries to visit a blocked site, Manaia can optionally allow them to request access. You'll receive a notification and can approve or deny the request from the dashboard or app. This encourages communication and helps kids understand the boundaries.

    Tips for Managing Profiles

  • Start with age-appropriate presets and adjust from there — you don't need to configure every category manually
  • Review reports weekly to spot trends and adjust filters as needed
  • Use schedules for structure rather than blocking everything — kids respond better to consistent boundaries
  • Talk to your children about why certain content is filtered — Manaia's conversation starters can help
