Free, but a black box.
Blocks malware and adult content for free at the DNS level. No dashboard, no per-child profiles, no screen time, no visibility into what got blocked.
Free, and only half the job.
Time limits, app limits and downtime, already on every iPhone and iPad at no cost. It manages how long someone is on the device — it does not stop a phishing site loading, and the Android tablet, the smart TV and the console are invisible to it.
Good for a child’s Android. Only that.
App approvals, screen time and location for a supervised child account, free. It is built around child accounts, so you cannot point it at a parent’s house, and it has nothing to say about scam sites or texts aimed at adults.
Enterprise tool that forgot about families.
Pioneered DNS-based filtering. Cisco-backed and still free for home use, but plainly no longer a priority for them — Cisco put the paid OpenDNS Home VIP and Umbrella Prosumer tiers on end-of-sale in April 2024, steering everyone toward the enterprise product. The interface is dated, setup needs manual router DNS changes, and there are no modern parental controls.
Powerful, but built for techies.
Highly configurable DNS filtering, and more capable than it gets credit for — it does block phishing as well as malware, it supports as many separate configurations as you want, and its "Recreation Time" can restrict apps and games to set hours. If you enjoy editing blocklists it is excellent. For everyone else, the analytics are raw query logs rather than anything a household can read.

Identity theft protection, VPN and parental controls in one subscription, and unlike most of this list it genuinely covers adults rather than only children. The catch for an Australian household is decisive: Aura’s own help centre states that fraud protection, credit monitoring and parental controls are available only to users based in the United States. The credit monitoring is wired to the US bureaus, and the VPN exits in the US.
Excellent at monitoring. Not at blocking.
Watches messages and social accounts for signs of bullying, self-harm and predation and alerts parents — genuinely good at something nobody else does well, and properly available here since it launched in Australia in 2022. It is a monitoring tool for children rather than a threat blocker, and the Bark Home box that would give it network-level coverage is not shipped outside the United States, so an Australian household is limited to the app on each child’s device.
Good for kids, not the whole family.
Parental-control app with screen time limits and activity monitoring. Works for younger children, but needs an app on every device. No scam blocking, no elder protection.
Australian, children-focused, and now part of Qustodio.
Australian-founded parental-control platform with local support, good for children and teens. Worth knowing before you shop for it: Qoria (which owns both) has folded the home product into Qustodio — familyzone.com’s families page now redirects there, and the page you land on says Family Zone "has joined forces with Qustodio". Either way it is built for children, with no elder scam protection and no whole-of-household security posture.
Impressive hardware, steep curve.
US-based network appliance with deep packet inspection. Its parental controls are genuinely strong — a "User" can group someone’s phone, tablet and laptop, and you can set daily or weekly time limits per app across all of them. The cost is the setup: you buy hardware, configure bridge mode, and need to be comfortable with firewall rules.
